Treating sick chicks

If you get a chick that is looking unwell the first thing to do is make sure it has enough heat, fresh water and food. You may also want to consider isolating it from others (particularly if it is getting bullied).

You can also try a home made tonic.

Homemade Sick Chick Tonic (Emergency Electrolyte + Energy Mix)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup warm water (not hot)

  • 2 teaspoons sugar or honey (quick energy)

  • A small pinch of salt (sodium)

  • A small pinch of baking soda (electrolyte balance)

  • Optional: a few drops of apple cider vinegar (boosts digestion and immunity)

Instructions:

  1. Mix all ingredients until fully dissolved.

  2. Offer it to the chick via dropper, shallow dish, or soaked onto a bit of bread or mash.

  3. Replace after a few hours and make fresh daily.

Additional Tips:

  • Keep the chick warm and separate from the others if it’s being bullied.

  • You can add a pinch of crushed boiled egg yolk or finely mashed scrambled egg for extra protein.

  • Avoid overfeeding or overhydrating – small, frequent amounts are better.
